Charles Boonzaaijer Foundation

The Stichting CHARLES BOONZAAIJER FOUNDATION has been established on the 03-10-2022 by the late Karel Harm (Charles) Boonzaaijer to maintain and protect his home, the national monument Vossiusstraat 15 in Amsterdam after his death. The Foundation is the heir of the monument and its classical interiors and collection of art as well as most of the remaining estate of the late Charles Boonzaaijer on the precondition that an ANBI is granted. The buildings Vossisstraat 1-15 are a highly successful example group of buildings around the Muzeumsdistrict. Fifteen terraced houses, in plan and section resembling an 18th century palace, incorporating two wings and pavilions. With Louis XVI ornaments like meander, palmettos. Vitruvian Scroll and immediately opposite the Vondelpark.

Isaac Gosschalk

The architect ISAAC GOSSCHALK (1838-1907) built this ensemble in 1879 and created No 15 for himself. He was a Dutch architect and engineer, chairman of the Amsterdam department of the Maatschappij tot Bevordering der Bouwkunst and municipal councillor in Amsterdam. He was an honorary member of, among others, the Society for the Promotion of Architecture, the Genootschap Architectura et Amicitia and the Royal Archaeological Society.

Charles Boonzaaijer

Karel Harm (Charles) Boonzaaijer was an architecture and artenthusiast with an international career in hospitality. Vossiusstraat 15 was his home for most of his adult live and the preservation and maintenance of his home, a classical Amsterdam “herenhaus” was at his heart and a love affair. Especially the 19th century architecture and interiors was his prime interest and he made huge efforts to keep his home in the style of this period and created rooms of outstanding elegance. He never just kept these rooms for himself but made them a lively center of the arts world, gave rooms to travelling artists and musicians and use his magnificent 2nd floor Empire suite for gatherings of collectors and architecture enthusiasts. When it was obvious that he would not survive a cancer diagnosis, he established our foundation and made us his heir to maintain the house, the interiors and collection and use them as before as a lively place to support the arts, music, ballet and architecture on the precondition that an ANBI-status will be granted. Once this status is granted, we will start a general restauration and maintenance plan and will operate the other rooms in the house as an hotel to fund the work of the foundation – the same way like Charles did this for over twenty years. This income as well as funds from donations, legats and other sources will solely be used to maintain the house and keep it a home for arts, interiors and artists.
